How to make a 3-wheel Messerschmitt into a 2-wheel Messerschmitt

I couldn't believe this when I saw it -- and it sounds like the announcer couldn't believe it either. (I wish I could understand what he was saying.)

Maybe one of the Messerschmitt mavens in the club can explain how this is done.
